How Are You? God’s Remedy for Loneliness

How are you? No, really, how are you? Are you afflicted with loneliness?

For those who belong to Christ, we delight in our eternal life, knowing we’ll exist forever with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We anticipate the joy of seeing Him face to face, knowing fully just as He knows us (1 Corinthians 13:12). Yet life on this earth involves ups and downs.

So what about the here and now? Perhaps you’re wondering whether your existence truly matters, and if so, how you can make a difference in other people’s lives.

I get it. Life’s journey can ache with loneliness, but there’s good news, “for He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you'” (Hebrews 13:5, NKJV).

God is with you. Right here and right now. He longs for you to recognize His presence, to sense His nearness, to experience His closeness.

A recent study of Acts 2 impressed on me the amazing reality of the indwelling Holy Spirit. After His resurrection and ascension, the Lord Jesus Christ “poured out” the Holy Spirit, who established residence in every believer.

Is. That. Not. Amazing?

As Christians, you and I are never alone. We might feel isolated or unaccepted, but the truth remains that the instant we place our faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit lives in us! He’s our Comforter, our Teacher, our Guide, and so much more.

So, yes. Our existence truly matters. “We are fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14), and “we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10).

We make a difference in people’s lives when we walk in the Spirit who dwells in us. Is He prompting us to share the Gospel? Let’s share. Is He leading us to show love? Let’s love. Is He convicting us about our thoughts and words? Let’s obey. And so on.

In order to recognize the Spirit’s promptings and to experience the Lord’s nearness, we need regular time in the Bible and in prayer. God reveals Himself in Scripture. He interacts with us in prayer. Moments with the Lord ease our loneliness, plus they shape and beautify us.

But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

A life filled with the Holy Spirit is a life controlled by the Holy Spirit. His work within us produces fruit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).

Take heart, beloved of God. You’re not alone, for the Holy Spirit is in you. Like a gentle stream or a mighty waterfall, He desires to flow through you, touching lives for His glory.
