Dressing Up: What to Do When Satan Tears Us Up

“And HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.”  Eph. 6:14, NASB

We’ve been progressing ever so slowly (!) through Ephesians 6, discussing the armor of God. Last time we considered truth, and today our topic revolves around righteousness. Thanks for your patience and interest as we continue our study. I trust God is bringing  these messages to our attention at appropriate times. He’s wonderfully able to do that.

So … a breastplate? This protective element is worn over the chest, protecting the heart, and I find that fact mighty interesting. Because we all know what happens when a heart is pierced by an arrow or injured some other way: Death.

Scripture links the breastplate to righteousness, which is the “state of him who is as he ought to be, righteousness, the condition acceptable to God.” In other words, righteousness covers and protects us from spiritual death, and this is only possible through Jesus. We can never be good enough to meet God’s standards on our own, but through faith in Christ, we receive Christ’s righteousness as a gift.

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Cor. 5:21).

In a sense, every Christian permanently wears the breastplate of righteousness, which is indicated by the aortist verb tense in verse 14: “having put on.” Righteousness is given to us at the moment of salvation, yet we need to recognize it—appropriate it—throughout life’s situations.

You know how the enemy, our accuser, loves to throw our sins in each of our faces? He attacks relentlessly, tearing us up inside like pieces of shredded linen. Those are the moments we need to remind ourselves of our righteousness in Christ. We need to stand up tall and wear our breastplate proudly, because the evil one can’t touch us.

Our sins are covered by Christ’s blood, and we’re forever “accepted in the beloved” (Eph. 1:6, KJV). (Click to tweet)

Isn’t that the most awesome news you’ve heard today?! Praise God for our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. Thank you for this biblical truth. Satan loves to attack us. We need to stand on the truth from God’s word!! Then Satan is defeated.

    1. Dear Emily,

You are welcome! God is so wonderful, isn’t He, to provide all we need for protection from the enemy? So glad you read this post and commented.

      Love to you in Christ,
      Emily
