The Weakness Remedy

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” – Philippians 4:13

I still remember hanging onto the bar and trying to keep my chin above it. This part of the high school Presidential Fitness Program especially taxed what little strength I had. It felt awful and I really wasn’t very good at it. In my thinking, it wasn’t very important, either. Seriously, who cares how long I could hang there?! I surely am glad those days are over.

Physical strength–or the lack thereof–is one thing. Yet interestingly, I’m learning more and more how much I lack inner strength. But not necessarily when it comes to the “big” things. It’s little stuff that can threaten to undo. Case in point:

I thought when summer break arrived, my crazy schedule would ease up. Wrong! A few responsibilities came off my plate but a new, major one was added. It seems like every which way I turn, Something. Needs. Doing. And the inside of me intermittently struggles with a sour, worn-out attitude. Perhaps you can relate.

One of the Bible’s beauties exists in its applicability to every life situation. Nothing is too small for God’s notice, and He tenderly speaks to us through His Word. He did this for me by revealing a valuable perspective for handling my occasionally overwhelming duties. It’s quite simple, really. A fill-in-the-blank, if you will. Simply insert your challenge into Philippians 4:13. For example, I began listing items like:

  • I can forgive this person through Christ which strengtheneth me (even though it’s the last thing I feel like doing right now.)
  • I can smile and be pleasant  through Christ which strengtheneth me (even though I have to spend the day outside where it’s HOT!)
  • I can be a blessing to others  through Christ which strengtheneth me (even though I’m exhausted.)

None of these insertions are overly spiritual or deep. Yet they represent real life. Everyday life. And that’s exactly what God’s Word is for!

Are we procrastinating when it comes to a certain responsibility? Are we avoiding our need to deal with heart issues? Are we allowing flesh to rule our responses?

There’s hope! We can ______________ through Christ. He will give us strength.

Nothing fancy. Nothing too hard to remember. Just the application of God’s Word to the specifics of our own lives. No matter how small or seemingly insignificant, God has already written the remedy …

“For the word of God is living and active …” – Hebrews 4:12

  1. Amen and amen! My heart resonates with your devotional thoughts. We are caught up now in preparing an investment property for sale (for the second time). 10 years ago we restored/renovated an 80 year old house to sell. It was sold at land contract and three weeks ago came back to us unexpectedly. We are recognizing our need for God’s strength as we work on this house. His grace and strength are more than sufficient and as we approach the finish point, we praise God that He is faithful always; without fail! You are in our prayers as you prepare for the conference in the fall. With love, Sylvia (and David)

    1. I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers as you work on this property to sell. We’ve also been working recently on our previous home that we’re trying to sell.
I’m glad to hear this devotional encouraged you. 🙂 God is so good.

      Love in our Lord,
      Emily

  2. I can relate to this, Emily. thanks for sharing about the strength He gives, even when we feel we can’t go another step.

    1. You’re so welcome, Jeanne. To God be the glory. His strength has pulled me through more situations than I realize. Keeping you in my prayers!

      Love in Christ,
      Emily
