Moving Forward

For in him we live, and move, and have our being …” – Acts 17:28 (KJV)

“Close your eyes,” my daughter instructed. She and her friend led me down the porch steps and along our front walkway. Their small hands clasped mine as I was kindly informed of each step and gently taken to our destination.

Well … I peeked  …

Moving forward blindly–especially down steps–was somewhat scary. So I cheated a little at first and opened my eyes enough to see. Then I considered my lack of trust in their abilities and decided to keep my eyes completely closed the rest of the way. And you know what? I made it! I didn’t trip or fall. I simply put one foot in front of the other and slowly but surely arrived at our endpoint.

What a great picture of the Christian life. God gently leads us by the hand and instructs us along the way. He clearly communicates important information so we won’t fall. He doesn’t rush us, but patiently allows us to progress at our own pace.

But sometimes we fail to trust Him completely … and we “peek”:

  • We rely on our own understanding rather than fully depending on His guidance.
  • We listen to worldly wisdom and choose paths contrary to God’s Word.
  • We “anxiously look about us” (Isaiah 41:10) instead of keeping our eyes on Him.

In Him we … move …

God is the only One who can move us forward. We don’t possess strength in ourselves. We don’t contain the necessary knowledge, nor do we understand how to move ahead. All through life, He lovingly holds us by the hand and never lets go.

God is perfectly capable of getting us where needed. The more we grow in our faith, the more we’re able to blindly trust Him. To let go … and let God.

“… your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.” – 1 Cor. 2:5
