Stretch forth Thy hand from on high; Rescue me and deliver me out of great waters” – Ps. 144:7
As he swiftly swam, I silently hoped he wasn’t coming to rescue me …
How embarrassing! Enjoying the ocean with my high school friends, we were swimming back to shore. But the current pulled fiercely and the water’s depth measured way over my head. I felt my strength waning, yet I doggedly persisted in trying to reach solid ground. I never considered that I might not make it.
The lifeguard evidently thought otherwise. “Hold on!” he shouted amidst the turbulent water. He threw the life preserver in my direction, waited for me to grasp it, and began swimming with me in tow. I safely emerged onto the sand moments later – thanks to his watchful care and expert skill.
Sometimes life situations mimic this experience. Difficulties come, yet we persistently plod forward. Then, more difficulties pile on top and set us back. “Three steps forward … two steps back.” Certainly, all of us can relate to that saying.
What’s crazy is when we leave God out of the equation. Rather than humbly asking Him for help, we think we can handle circumstances on our own. Pride causes us to resist His help. So we end up thrashing around and almost going completely under … just because we think we’re strong enough on our own.
That’s pure foolishness. And absolutely unnecessary.
May God graciously work in our hearts and enable us to recognize our need … for Him. Instead of trying to handle life’s difficulties alone, let’s reach up to the One who reaches down.
“Loving Father in heaven, You know my needs today. I worship You for Your compassionate heart and saving strength. I confess my periodic prideful resistance and yield anew to Your perfect ways. Thank You for Your mighty outstretched hand! Please focus my eyes on You that I might clearly discern Your awesome provision in every situation. In the beloved name of Jesus, Your Son, Amen.”
“… surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10
