Truth to Remember When Things Go Wrong

“The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy” (Zephaniah 3:17, NASB).

First my computer crashed. Now our internet keeps cutting out. Anything I’ve tried to accomplish in the writing/speaking realm over the past couple of weeks has involved obstacles. Home life has included difficulties, too. Our vacuum cleaner broke, followed by our microwave. Other issues have arisen as well, and I’m leaning extra hard on the Lord these days.

Though situations differ, I bet you can relate.

Sometimes life bursts with challenges, and we’re tempted to get angry, defeated, or so on. Before we slip down those slopes, let’s remember three truths when things go wrong:

TRUTH #1 God loves you and me

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).

Despite the difficulties we encounter, nothing and no one can come between God’s love for us. We might experience frustration and irritation, sadness and despair, or weariness and teariness. But this truth remains: God loves you and me. He stopped at nothing to declare His love, sending His only beloved Son to die in our place. We’re secure in Christ, never alone or unloved. Like the continuity of a sphere, God’s love is everlasting.

TRUTH #2 God is sovereign

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Problems might abound in our lives, but God reigns in complete ease. Nothing surprises Him. Nothing deters Him. His wisdom exceeds mankind’s best idea. We can rest in the knowledge that God exercises absolute control over every aspect of our lives. Though confusion can accompany our problems and attach itself to us like a leech, our Lord clears blurred vision. He ushers order into chaos, positioning each piece in its place. God possesses a good plan, which He will accomplish.

TRUTH #3 God is victorious

But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).

When we contemplate giving up or giving in, we need to recognize Christ’s power. Both Lord and King, Jesus Christ is seated at God’s right hand. Love fills His heart as He witnesses our trials and intercedes on our behalf. He carries us, lifting us up out of pits and disentangling us from snares.

As we gaze upon our victorious Savior, our burdens lift. He goes before us, hacking at the briars that block our way and creating a pathway where none existed before. Because God never fails, we can sing the ancient words of Deborah and Barak, “O my soul, march on with strength” (Judges 5:21).

Dear one, I pray this message flows into the crevices of your heart, refreshing you with peace and hope. Even when things go wrong, God loves us, He remains in utter control, and He’s already won the victory. Armed with these three truths, let’s stare down every life obstacle in the mighty name of JESUS.
