Discovering God’s Names: Because He’s the Alpha & Omega, We Need Not Fear

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” Rev. 22:13, NASB

In the writing world, many beginnings and endings occur. The way an article, a chapter—or in my case, a lesson—starts and finishes is of utmost importance. In fact, the entire book should draw the reader in immediately, retain his/her interest throughout, and close so the reader is satisfied but wanting more.

While the world began thousands of years ago, it’s degenerated so severely that many sense the end is near. Scripture teaches this truth and provides evidences for us to consider. And although Philippians 4 isn’t discussing end times, an interesting thought crossed my mind concerning verse 5: “Let your forbearing spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.” Instead of declaring the end is near, which carries an element of doom, Paul says, “The Lord is near.” He focuses on Jesus’ nearness. 

The apostle Paul includes this seemingly out of place phrase in the midst of his instructions. He inserts a reason and a hope for the ways we should think and behave: “The Lord is near.” Yes, the end is near, but in all reality, JESUS is the end, the Omega. He gives us purpose and hope as we look toward the future.

It’s easy these days to fear. Corruption, violence, wickedness, and more covers the earth. Like a suffocating blanket pulled over one’s head, the world’s evil sucks away our peace and makes it challenging to view the future with hope.

Jesus, the beginning of all we know, is the One who will finish everything. We need not fear the future. Rather, let’s look for Him each day. Let’s spend time getting to know Him more, following Him, and sharing His goodness with others.  When we concentrate on the truth of Christ’s nearness more than the world’s troubles, we possess a reason and a hope for all of our days between the beginning and the end. God encompasses all.
